How can I get rid of the "My Search Dial toolbar and all the other junk following it??

Posted

I downloaded Defrag2 and got it and any number of annoying other things, among which is this "My Search Dial toolbar followed by shopping deals and adds for registry fixing, etc. Running Windows Vista, home.

There seem to be quite a few questionable extensions here:

  • GreatArcadeHits Add-on
  • MySearchDial NewTab
  • mysearchdial.com
  • Shopop Widget
  • Start Page

Try disabling them on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.

Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

But wait... before restarting, you might first want to clear the user.js file. That could override your preferences and potentially reenable the extensions. This article describes how to track it down and remove it: How to fix preferences that won't save.

Any improvement?

To continue the hygiene at the broader level:

(1) Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. Click the "Installed on" column heading to bring the most recent to the top and see what was bundled with what. Gather all relevant intelligence and then uninstall what you can.

(2) Use some supplemental malware cleaners to exorcise remaining demons. This article lists scanners that other Firefox users have found helpful: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.
