Is the rumor i just read about new versions of firefox getting a Identity attached to it true? If it is, WHY? why would you ruin the privacy of your browser?

It seems privacy and integrity is under attack everywhere, Even from Firefox? I dont use firefox for anything illegal but i still value my privacy. So, is the rumors true?

Yes, exactly what Philipp said. Also Klint I was about to give you that same link you found to that blog post but it felt old and I could not find a date anywhere on the page (I hate blog posts that have no dates!). But those were early concepts and a lot has changed since then.

Anyway, I found a great Youtube video explaining what Persona is here:
http://pyvideo.org/video/1764/beyond-passwords-secure-authentication-with-mozi-0

And some articles explaining more about Persona:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-persona
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-is-persona-and-how-does-it-work

The important thing to know is it isn't mandatory and you aren't tricked into making an account. Also there seems to be some confusion over what to call it: Identity or Persona. Identity is the team name and Persona is the project name. The Identity team works on and manages the Persona login project.

I was getting confused myself and I hope that the right word (Persona) is used by the media from now on so people can find information about Persona when they search.

Hey Klint,

I haven't heard anything about Firefox sharing your "identity" or trying to invade your privacy. Could you link me to the article you read so I can give you a better explanation of what it was you read? Thanks.

i did read it as a post on facebook. The original post was:

"nästa version av #firefox kommer att ha #identitet inbyggt - det är 425 miljoner människor som får automatisk, generell #identitet"

In english it translates to:

"the next version of firefox will have identity built in - Thats 425 million people that gets an automatic, general identity".

So my general question is, is this person making a misstake or?

Another option is to explain exactly what this identy is, Why it is so good and why it doesnt threaten mine or anyone elses privacy.

(As you can probably tell im quite honestly Intressted/bothered by it).

Did some research and apparently its some kind of (one loggin to many sites at once feature). http://www.azarask.in/blog/post/identity-in-the-browser-firefox/

Short to say, i dont need it. You can choose not to activate it right? and it wont force or otherwise fool me into making an account right?

hello, this blog post was from 2009 - in the meantime this project has evolved into an open source login-system named Persona, that web developers can use for their sites. this isn't specific to firefox and will work with all other browsers as well...
