Whenever I click on any .pdf icon all I get is a blank page. Have tried usual avenues such as disabling pop up blockers- etc. No problems if I try to perform this task in IE. Have had varying issues that have piled up over time with the constant upgrades such as javascript that is "disabled due to possible exploitation", flash shockwave failures, I was a diehard IE fan and former tech desk monkey once upon a time.Lately though, my switch to FIrefox is becoming not so heady any more. How do I fix the PDF issue?

Chosen solution

In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:

  1. Go to Tools > Options (or Firefox > Options).
  2. In the Options window, select the Applications tab.
  3. In the Search field, type PDF. You should find Portable Document Format (PDF).
  4. On the right handside you should find an Action column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose Preview in Firefox.

Please check if all your plugins are up-to-date. To do this, go to the Mozilla Plugin Check site.

Once you're there, the site will check if all your plugins have the latest versions. If you see plugins in the list that have a yellow Update button or a red Update now button, please update these immediately.

To do so, please click each red or yellow button. Then you should see a site that allows you to download the latest version. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation and follow the steps mentioned in the installation procedure.

I have a similar problem only on FireFox (currently running 26.0) with WIndows7 PRO 64 bit. On my old XP machine the add-on allows using "Using Adobe Reader in FireFox" as an option for Adobe Acrobat Document and the document opens. In my WIN7 the only option is "ask" or "Use Adobe Reader" (acroread32) and both options then only present me with a download window (document does not open).

Plugin is up to date and this used to work properly prior to Version 24 (I think 23 was the last version it worked properly, but I'm not sure at this point). I even uninstalled and re-installed Acrobat Reader.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Hammond-C3, what version of Adobe Reader do you have, the 10 series or the 11 series?

When you check the Add-ons page, what version of the Adobe Acrobat plugin shows there? Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. Any disabled plugins (set to Never Activate) cluster toward the bottom of the list.

To check your Adobe software for updates, I suggest using the Help menu within the product. Help > Check for Updates
