You can also check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Do you have an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop that may have been created as the result of a reset?

Do you have more than one Firefox profile folder?

Firefox keeps a number of backups of your bookmarks. Could you try the following, going back one day at a time, to see whether you can restore a good set?

Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer

By the way, your More System Details shows that you have a user.js file in your settings folder (Firefox profile folder). Unless you created this file intentionally, you may want to investigate or remove it to avoid having the settings in that file override your preferred settings at startup. More info in this article: How to fix preferences that won't save.

Question owner

Hi thank you I tried to follow the instructions regarding the user.js file but couldn't find the file.

will this help me with finding the bookmarks?

Question owner

Hi lamedmem, the full name of the file you opened in Notepad is profiles.ini.

Windows will hide some file extensions by default, which you can switch so it's easier to figure out what kind of files you're working with (the tiny icons are not very self-explanatory). See: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wi.../show-hidden-files.

Anyway, that file shows that Firefox only is aware of one profile in the Profiles folder. However, please double-click into the Profiles folder (the one with the yellow folder icon) and check for yourself whether there is a second profile inside.

Question owner

Thanks very much jscher i did that and attached are the results where could my bookmarks have gone to

Hi lamedmem, I think that's the same screen shot. Do you have a second one showing what's inside the Profile folder (instead of the profiles.ini file)?

Question owner

hi sorry here it is

Hi lamedmem, it looks like Firefox may have "Reset" twice. If you look in each of the folders, can you find a bookmarkbackups folder with a large .json file that most likely has your missing bookmarks? You can copy it out to a more convenient folder (e.g., Documents) so when you use the Choose File option to restore it, it's not so deeply buried. The Choose File option is on the Restore menu below the dated backups, as shown in the article Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer.

Looks that something has gone wrong with the reset as you still have Firefox profile folders with a date/time stamp that a reset creates, but are using a regular default profile.
Such a new default profile is likely to have been created because of a problem with the profiles.ini file (if profiles.ini is missing the Firefox will create a new default profile).

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

You can look at the time stamps or check the name of the JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder.
