Frequent unresponsiveness and need to force quit firefox using mac Snow Leopard. Not too many tabs, not repair permissions. Maybe Flash or Java?

Firefox has been frequently crashing while performing simple tasks like opening a new tab or trying to type in a text box like this one. I have tried to do the regular Disk Utility mac troubleshooting that normally fixes such errors and I have tried to limit the number of tabs I have open. But this problem has been getting progressively worse. Even now while only typing here, Activity Monitor is showing that Firefox is using around 7% of the CPU capacity and 36 threads. My computer may be somewhat old but it shouldn't be so old that it needs that much processing power just to type on the internet.

These are the my last 5 submitted crash report ID numbers: Crash ID: bp-893c2a4c-1344-4bbc-a344-cf8b12130926 Crash ID: bp-c2a1ed00-8404-4307-96bb-e0e212130911 Crash ID: bp-ffefa335-d86c-4ebc-9498-c9ce02130825 Crash ID: bp-e13dbd5a-5c01-4659-9bea-36fc32130709 Crash ID: bp-4e272bba-bc58-4fc5-838c-243a42130618

Most of the time the crash reporter does not pop up though because I have to force quit and restart the whole program. Or it has not crashed entirely but been incredibly slow and non-responsive.

When I had similar problems in the past it was because my entire HD was fried due to power surges and so I had to get it replaced. But my disk appears to be ok after checking in safe mode and single user mode.

Also, I recently used the program IceClean to repair disk permissions, verify disk, perform routine maintenance, and clean up databases.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

You can do a check for corrupted and duplicate fonts and other font issues:

Ok I disabled hardware acceleration and I just went ahead and got rid of all the problem/duplicate fonts using Font Book. I also went and disabled and extensions and add-ons that I don't use very often and kept only the ones I have not had problems with in the past.

Upon restarting firefox I have yet to encounter any serious issues. When opening gmail and several other times out of the blue the CPU % shot up to above 100% momentarily and while typing this it has randomly shot up to 20% but everything else seems to be running smoothly. I will post again if something else happens.

Thank you for your help!
