why does my website not display properly using firefox

Posted

My website boscarn wedding cars opens as it should using internet explorer or chrome etc, however recently I received complaints about the layout or display of my website using mozilla firefox. I have investigated and research ways to fix this and have gotten no where. I have no control over people using firefox if they want to, but when it starts effecting my business I have to try and get it sorted. I use windows xp pro but know that this same thing happens on windows 7 and 8 also.

I use daily.com instant website, web hosting to create my website. The site is www.boscarnweddingcars.co.uk please take a look and advise on how to fix this problem.

Please get back to me as soon as possible. this is my livelyhood.

Hi qcnigel,

You might want to run your code through the W3C validator -

It will help you identify issues with the coding on your site that are potentially causing display issues.

A properly programmed site should be tested on and finally display the same on all of the major browser platforms (ie, 'cross browser compatible')

This is the Validator: http://validator.w3.org/

Enter your URL in the box and hit enter, you will see your site has 95 Errors, 44 warning(s)

Your issue is not a Firefox or any other browser issue. It's a programming issue.

Regards,

I have this problem, too with my website, www.intimacytravel.com. See the comparison attached between using Firefox and the way it should look using Internet Explorer. I also have a problem editing the site with Firefox.

I looked at your site and have attached a screenshot. All the links seem to work. You have a banner that runs across the middle of the first page. Not sure if that was your intention. Take a look. Couldn't get the entire page in so I clipped off the bottom. By the way, you may want to Capitalize "cars" in "Welcome to Boscarn cars."

Would you take a look at my site, www.IntimacyTravel. com and see if the affiliate links look okay to you. I'm having a similar problem. Thanks.

Hi garyd11 -

For a very long time now - IE has been the weakest link as a development platform to test on . Mozilla has always been the most stringent (prior to Chrome/Safari etc)

If you wanted to be sure your site was coded correctly - you tested on Mozilla, FIRST. EVERYTHING gets by in IE.

The easiest way to know if there are coding issues on your site is to test with the validator that I provided above -

Additionally, your site is a Weebly (drag and drop) site - therefore it's utilizing a weebly framework and you don't have complete control over what is happening on it.

Best~

Thanks for the reply. Were you able to view my website on Firefox? Did it look messed up as far as not show HTML banners? Why would they work perfectly on Firefox for MAC and not on a PC. I've asked some friends who have PC Firefox to view my site and they seem to think it looks OK. Could it possibly be some setting on MY computer?

Hi gary,

I looked at it only briefly - on and then off. As I said previously, using the validator> http://validator.w3.org will show you what is happening - no, it is not your computer.

On your site there are well over 200 errors - occasionally correcting one line error fixes many issues - I can only suggest that you use it to see what is happening for yourself.

The display issue for cross browser compatibility is only one issue in the larger scheme of things these days - since SO many people are also viewing sites on mobile and websites should be keeping up with technology and also designed to be what is referred to as "responsive" - built to not only display properly on multiple browser platforms but ALSO adjusting to the MANY different screen sizes as well.

These are great examples of why it is a good a reason to find quality designers / developers to build your sites for you and guide you on best practices etc.

Best, bcr8tive~

Note that the page source shows a problem with the defaults.css file that should be coming from this link:

The first link tag points to a nonexistent file (404) and the href attribute of the second link tag contains JavaScript code:

<link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" href="css/default.css">
<link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" href=""+regHeader+"://instantwebsite.daily.co.uk/swiz/editor/css/default.css">

You can also check the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer;Ctrl+Shift+K) for errors.

You can edit your css using inspect elements in mozilla, so you can easily find and solve the problem.

Hi victimofmozilla, this thread was for webmasters who needed advice on their own sites. The validation tool isn't useful if you can't actually change the page...

If the following suggestions don't help, please start a new question with your system and add-on information. (There's a link at the top of this page.)

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache

Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.

Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page.

To rule out a problem caused by an extension or hardware acceleration of graphics, try the same pages in Firefox's Safe Mode. That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)
