New tab setting keeps changing to blank. How do I make it stay?

Posted

Recently, when I choose new tab it is blank instead of having the sites I've previously pinned there. I learned how to reset it with about:config and have successfully gotten the new tab back. However, with in the same session or when moving to a new location it constantly resets to blank. How do I keep it from doing this?

Hello lvfrazier, try the SearchReset add-on and check firefox again(the SearchReset add-on only runs once and then uninstall itself)

If you can not keep the changes after you restart Firefox then see: Preferences not saved

thank you

Ran the SearchReset add-on, restarted Firefox and the new tab is once again blank. I did not see anything helpful on the Preferences not saved link. Any other ideas on why this has become an issue when it was not for the last year?

Could it be a byproduct of one of your extensions?

Does it make any difference whether the new tab is in a regular window or private window?

@jscher2000 I suppose it could be an extension issue but I'm not sure which one. It does happen in a private window as well.

Hi lvfrazier, I don't think it's possible to disable JavaScript on the new tab page or other built-in pages. If those pages aren't working, it could indicate some damage to Firefox's program files, which usually is addressed by a "clean install." A clean install replaces the Firefox program files but does not remove your personal data. A volunteer can give step-by-step instructions if investigating your extensions and a new profile do not pan out.

With respect to extensions, could you try Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

I don't know how long you have to browse to re-create the problem or be confident that it doesn't occur. Please report back on whether you notice any change.

Which page do you get if you type (or paste) about:newtab in the location bar?

Also check that the new tab page is enabled (browser.newtabpage.enabled = true).

@cor-el when I use about:newtab it is the correct tab (with my pinned URLs) but it keeps reverting back to blank. New tab page is enabled.

You can check for problems with preferences.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Rename or delete the prefs.js file and possible numbered prefs-##.js files and a possible user.js file to reset all prefs to the default value.

Problem still exists in Safe Mode. Any idea what would cause browser.newtab.url to constantly reset to blank? Every time I update that it works for a period of time.

Does the value of the browser.newtab.url pref change?

Firefox wouldn't make such a change, so if this happens then either an extension or other (security) software makes such a change.

Hi, I have the exact same problem and tried all of the listed ideas, even completely reinstalling Firefox and deleting all the data. Is there any solution now? I think the problem begun after getting rid of some software that changed a few settings, but I don't have that anymore.

Hi XBeth, could you check:

  • If you manually go to the about:newtab page (type or paste about:newtab in the address bar and press Enter), does it displays correctly?
  • Firefox lets you reset the newtab preference to default:

    (1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

    (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste newtab and pause while the list is filtered

    (3) Right-click the browser.newtab.url preference and choose Reset.

Does it become un-bolded and say default, string, about:newtab? Or does it stay bolded and show user set, string, about:blank?

Do you still have ShopAtHome.com Toolbar 7.1.0.2 that shows in the System Details List installed and enabled as this could be a suspicious extension.

When I open about:config, the browser.newtab.url is bold. After the reset, it does become un-bolded and reads about:newtab under value. Opening a new tab works as it should. But after I close and open Firefox, it's once again bold and doesn't show anything under value. And every opened new tab is blank. (The type is always string.)

I don't have any search bars or other add-ons. Under extensions, there's only Logitech SetPoint.

Thanks for trying to help.

In my case the browser.newtab.url setting was correct. However, the browser.newtab.enabled setting had been set to "user set" and "false". When I reset it, it changed to "default" and "true" and the problem was corrected.
