Why can't I open pdf or docs attachments? Save to file comes up but when clicked I cannot find where it goes

more options

I click on attachment, nothing happens, it says scanning file then nothing. The save to computer option is up but when I click on it, it looks like something may happen for a second then nothing - don't know where it goes. I want to open file and view then have choice to save! Just like it used to before today!

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • Open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

Please post the results of this test.

Please ensure that your anti-virus/firewall program is not preventing Firefox from downloading a safe file.

In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:

  1. Go to Tools > Options (or Firefox > Options).
  2. In the Options window, select the Applications tab.
  3. In the Search field, type PDF. You should find Portable Document Format (PDF).
  4. On the right handside you should find an Action column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose Preview in Firefox.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back soon.

Is this in Yahoo! mail? Several other users are reporting the same problem, although for some users it is intermittent or doesn't affect all their accounts. There are a variety of suggestions but not yet a confirmed solution in this thread: Firefox suddently stopped downloading email attachments.

Apologies if this sounds random, but sometimes inexplicable Yahoo mail problem are solved this way...

If you are using an old bookmark or old home page URL to go to Yahoo mail, allow Yahoo to redirect you to its preferred current mail server using this address:

http://mail.yahoo.com/

at the risk of sounding obtuse, How do I make sure the firewall is not the issue?

more options

Firewall (or other security/privacy) software can selective block your internet traffic based on a range of criteria:

  • Requesting program (e.g., blocking firefox.exe or plugin-container.exe)
  • Destination site (e.g., blocking yahoo.com or yimg.com)
  • Content type (e.g., blocking scripts)

I no longer use a separate Firewall (just the Windows 7 firewall), so I couldn't tell you by menu/screen where to look for those settings. But if you mention which software it is, another volunteer might be familiar with it.
