firefox 23.0, attachments won't open or download. this includes PDFs, movie clips, perhaps others.

i tried safe mode and it works. so it suggested turning off accelerator, use default themes and disabling extensions. i tried all that and none of that worked.

anybody have any other ideas?

Hello,

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

thanks for the reply.

I had turned off the accelerator before but tried it again. still did not work. i installed two new graphics drivers and that did not help either.

when i click on the object in my email, it is being scanned by the virus protection but does not open (i also tried disabling the virus protection and that did not help). the SAVE item below the object does not behave the way it used to either. if clicked, it just says "save to computer". before it would bring up a window. when i click the download arrow in the upper right of the firefox screen, i used to just see the downloads. now it comes up with "show all downloads" and i have to click that to see the list. this browser is working differently than it did a week ago. don't know what happened since then.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

i ran a scan using PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Anti Virus. still no luck. I think i am about out of options. i might have to abandon FireFox but i hate to since it has served me well. But i get a lot of attachments and i have to be able to view these easily.

Thanks.

Try below.

  1. In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter. The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear.
  2. Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page. A list of settings should appear
  3. Filter the list by typing in the search bar at the top. Type in scanWhenDone. You should now find the "browser.download.scanWhenDone" preference.
  4. Double-click on that preference to set the value to false.
  5. Next, try to download and or upload something and see if it works.
