search in address bar
When using the address bar to search Firefox automatically chooses the website it thinks is best and opens the page. How do I prevent this from happening?
Chosen solution
The address bar is pretty powerful for searching as it is. Its behaviour is modifiable and you may even on the fly restrict it to certain categories.

You still should be able to pick one of the suggestions if you do not hit the return or green arrow. Or for now* why not use the search bar instead.
*(Changes are in progress, the two bars may be amalgamated in the near future, and at a later date maybe search tabs could be introduced.)
Thank you for your response. I sometimes use the search bar. However, having just moved from Google Chrome I'm finding an adjustment is necessary in the way I use my browser. I just wondered if there was a setting that made Firefox so this.
Hello benltan,
In addition to John99's suggestion I recommend you upgrade to the latest version of Firefox (23).
Hello eddyc
Thank you for your response. Updating to the latest Firefox seems to have fixed the problem.
Many thanks for your help!

I should also mention
- The search bar is customisable
- Note in Firefox 23 the other searches will use whatever search engine is selected for the searchbar
- use this add-on if you prefer the older behaviour
