How do you stop Firefox changing pages by itself?

Hi everyone:

This has happened for years. It doesn’t matter what set-up I have, what computer I am on, which version of Firefox I am using (at least after v. 3—I have little experience before then) or what website I am at. It doesn’t matter about the mouse or the keyboard. I would have filed this years ago but I guess tonight just got me upset enough to write.

Firefox just changes pages by itself. You can be in the middle of doing something, and it decides to go back one page.

Sometimes I lose work, it’s only a matter of degree. Thank goodness Wordpress saves more regularly these days so I usually find I can recover the work. Sometimes it happens on Facebook. It will happen once a day. It’s like how Firefox shrinks its type size on you without you hitting any of the assigned keys.

I hope someone can help. I’ve put up with it since the 2000s.

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Thank you. The trouble is I never know when it’s going to happen, and it’s not practical for me to be on safe mode all day (e.g.this could happen late at night, as it just did!).

It also happened when I was away from the computer recently, but fortunately Wordpress asked if I wanted to go to the new page and lose my editing. So I know it has nothing to do with my keystrokes, because I wasn’t at my computer at the time. Firefox has done this for a decade, and I’m very certain I haven’t had the same set-up or extensions over that time.

I know this isn’t an answer so one of these days I will take your advice and go on safe mode, maybe over the Christmas break when I don’t have to use my browser for work as often.
