Firefox stall and crash when adding or downloading any files

Firefox will stall and crash after attempting to add or download any kind of files. I have also note that when highlighted the words in the boxes under the top of the screen menus File, Edit, Tools and Help will look like frayed, this will not happen with the menus View, History and Bookmarks where the words are solid and clear. I recently reinstalled Firefox and the program has created a Old Firefox Data in my desktop. The last version I had +/- two years was also having a similar problem plus a total freeze and crash by going to Options, which does not happen anymore.

Hello EmmanuelF, try to Turn off hardware acceleration and check it again.

if you have the crashes again, in order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash ID's to help us learn more about your crash.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the address bar (that's where you enter your website URL) and press Enter. You should now see a list of submitted crash reports.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent crash ID's that you see in the crash report window and paste them into your response here.

I recently reinstalled Firefox and the program has created a Old Firefox Data in my desktop.

probably you Reset Firefox ,.....after the reset is finished, your old Firefox profile information will be placed on your desktop in a folder named "Old Firefox Data." If the reset didn't fix your problem you can restore some of the information not saved by copying files to the new profile that was created.... (see the note in the Reset Firefox link)

Turning off Hardware acceleration did not fixed.

I almost sure I did not reset Firefox but rather the program did it during the re-installation. Thanks for the info about restoring profile files.

Hello the crash reports is malware related.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

My only concern was the page I saw clearly has the date 2011. I believe this could confuse a less experienced user. Truthfully it confused me. Thank you for your response and compliment. If you say the program is the same I believe you. Why not use the link without the date?

Although always very conscious of security in my pc, two years ago I have a bug trying to do some damage in this system. After some fight and the help of some online scanners, TDSSKiller and even Combo Fix, I tough I got ready of the problem; nevertheless I have to deleted Firefox because maybe it was compromise beyond the point of fixing.

This days find me reinstalling Firefox, I thought that furthers updates will have work for a stronger program and a clean running.

I have always like Firefox way above any other browser; is not as intrusive as others and reacts fairly fast (plus give me more options that the main stream and corporate ones).

This computer runs now with:

AVG Antivirus Free Edition 2013, Spybot w/ Tea Timer (for the registry), SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebites' Anti-Malware, Windows Defender, Zone Alarm (for firewall)

I try to run them often, even in safe mode when possible.

Ideato, if you are sure this is a malware related issue I will do as suggested at the end of this article that you point out (Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware) and go to see the Pros at Bleeping Computer Forums, once they are sure I don't have anything of risk I come back here for the follow up.

I reread your earlier post by using both AVG antivirus and Windows Defender at the same time you are actually creating a weakness because the programs can conflict. You may believe more protection is better that is not true if the programs fight each other. I recommend you choose one and disable the other. The choice is yours to do this or not do this, I can only make a suggestion.

Thank you David, I don't think that library is of help yet because we don't even know if I have a malware. I am waiting on Ideato or somebody else with knowledge on the crash ID's reports to point out the problem and go from there. If malware is suspected them I go down the road I explained before; I just want to be kind of sure because that's a very time consuming situation. Thanks
