Hi Friends, The update which I received upon opening Ff today is unacceptable. My screen is somehow zoomed, even though my zoom control reports that it's at 100%. My Favorites add-on does not show anything in it.

So I either would like to fix those 2 vital issues, or uninstall the update which was automatically installed.

Thank you very much.

Hello,

Firefox on Windows is now following display scaling options which may render text larger on high resolution displays. You can adjust your screen resolution. To modify it do the following:

  • Type about:config into the Firefox address bar and tap on the Enter key.
  • If the warning This might void your warranty appears, click I'll be careful, I promise.
  • Search for layout.css.devPixelsPerPx

Fx22layout.css.devPixelsPerPx

  • Double-click on layout.css.devPixelsPerPx to modify its value. The default is -1.0 in Firefox 22 and above. Change it to 1.0 to make it work like in previous Firefox versions.

If necessary, further adjust the value in 0.1 or 0.05 steps. Use values between 1.0 and about 0.5 to reduce elements in size. Use values greater than 1.0 to increase size. For example, a value of 1.25 will increase font size to 125% to accommodate the default DPI setting in Windows 8. Double check the value that you enter. Setting a too small value will make everything disappear and a too large value will blow things up.

If web pages still need to be adjusted then you can look at the Default FullZoom Level or NoSquint extension.

To adjust the font size for the user interface, you can use the Theme Font & Size Changer extension.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

Well, I wasn't aware that my screen was high resolution, in the first place.

That change does seem to make websites look the same as before. But all the text associated with the browser itself is too small, i.e. the menu, the tabs, the address (URL) and search fields are all too small, and at the bottom, the info provided by the No Script extension.

This is exactly the reason why I hate automatic updates. Now I have to spend an hour or 2 trying to fix what the update broke.

Can you tell me, is this....what ever it is (I certainly wouldn't call it an improvement!) going to be permanent? Because I was happy with Firefox v 21.0, and I won't mind using it for the forseeable future.

Would you please tell me how to get 21.0 back?

Thanks.

Edit -- And also please tell me how to disable automatic updates? Thx

Unless there is some way to uninstall this 1 particular....thing, whatever you call it. Because I do understand that updates help to keep the browser secure, and I wouldn't want to miss the security provided by the updates. But whatever this piece of garbage is, I don't want it. So if there is a way to get rid of it, I can continue getting the security updates.

Thanks again.

Well you shouldn't disable auto updates but i reccomend uninstalling firefox then installing Firefox ESR which only updates once per year and dont apply these DPI changes, get it from here. It does though have security updates but they dont break anything.

In case if something goes horribly wrong (You are downgrading from 22 to 17.0.7)

Have you installed the Theme Font & Size Changer add-on?
That will let you adjust the Firefox user interface font sizes.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/theme-font-size-changer/

Yes, that is a permanent change. It fixes what was wrong with Firefox on Win7 (and probably Win8, too).

Well now I see that it's not just the browser tabs, menu, address, search and No Script text that's smaller. The History window, which I have to use because of the missing Favorites, that text is also too small!

So even if I can fix the theme's text, I'm not sure if that would affect the History window's text.

And so is the text in my right-click menu too small!!

Firefox ESR....Extended Support Release -- "Firefox ESR is intended for groups who deploy and maintain the desktop environment in large organizations."

That doesn't really sound appropriate for me. I'm just a single user -- no group, no organization.

I don't know why the developers have to continually fix things that aren't broken. It's infuriating!!

Exactly what was it that developers thought was so wrong with Ff on Windows 7?

Changes all fonts in Firefox.

I don't understand what you're showing me with that screenshot.

How much time does arguing over the recommendations offered here add to your time?

You asked: So even if I can fix the theme's text, I'm not sure if that would affect the History window's text. I posted the screenshot and here's an other one with ubuntu fonts.

I'm apologize for letting my frustration out in my messages.

But I do want to understand what the problem was, that they wanted to fix. Once I understand that, I can move on and do whatever I have to to do.

And I would also want to let developers know that I saw nothing wrong, if there is any way to get a message through to developers.

Will the Theme Font & Size Changer fix the text in the History and right-click menu, as well as tabs, address, etc.?

  • I just gave you the answer to that twice above, yes it changes all fonts in Mozilla Firefox.

Waka_Flocka_Flame, are you showing me text that has been fixed? Or changed? It would be hard to compare since I haven't seen what it looks like on your screen, before it was fixed or changed.

Or maybe you're showing examples of which text will be fixed?

I'm sorry not to understand. I don't mean to sound argumentative.

Sorry, I think we posted at the same time.

I'm not a computer expert. I thought theme meant the part above the browser window (address, tabs, menu). I wouldn't ask specifically about the History window, for example, if I already knew that changing the theme would change that too.

I will go and try to download that add-on.

Before and after, you can change to many fonts, sizes, and bold or italicise them. You can also change the background color.

The Mozilla developers fixed what was broken in Firefox with Win7 since Win7 was first released. Why it took so long is beyond reason, it affected many Win7 & Firefox users, but not all.

Then again, sometimes a person gets so used to a problem that when it is finally corrected - that looks wrong. I can't gauge how bad the issue was, I use WinXP and Ubuntu 12.04 and never saw the issue myself. I build my own PCs and when Win7 first came out it would have cost me more than I spent on the parts I bought to put this PC together.

Ok, everything seems more or less back to normal.

Can you name what the problem was, so I can look it up?

As I've said, I never saw any problem.

Well thank you for that, the edmeister. Most of it is over my head....and way more info than I have time to read. But the stated problem seems to be that text was too small on "hidpi" screens. My screen is just a regular LCD screen on a very basic laptop. I really don't think it's anything special. So while one might guess that fixing too small text would make it bigger, all the "fix" did for me, was make my text, which was NOT too small, too small! Go figure!!

I don't know how to mark the 1 solution to the problem, because it was a 2-part solution, coming from 2 different replies. And the replies don't seem to be numbered.... Will this forum allow 2 replies to be marked as the solution?
