Elements of the screen blank out and disappear when scrolling or after minimisingand restoring

Since updating to the latest version of Firefox I have been experiencing problems with elements of a page disappearing if I should switch between different tabs or windows, or minimising then restoring. I have to scroll up and down the page to restore text, pictures, links or other elements of the page. The delay in restoring the full page to a readable and useful state can often be as much as 10 seconds. I would have included a screenshot, but the advised method of screen capture.print doesn't work on my computer (perhaps because I have Windows XP family edition SP3).

Hello,

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Hi, thanks for your help. I have checked my graphics card drivers and they are the latest. I'm going to try adjusting the settings (though I'm going to do a backup of my disk first, as I've had problems in the past "tweeking" graphics cards). As for the hardware acceleration setting on firefox, sorry to say no effect what-so-ever. So, next stop changing my graphics card settings. Thanks again for your help and advice.

Does this still happen if you run Firefox in Safe Mode?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Hi, in a way you inspired me to try disabling add on's, plugins and what have you one-by-one. What had the most dramatic effect was disabling Java deploymentment toolkit. While it is not perfect, it is still far better than before and is now useable. Thanks to everyone who helped.
