Proxy Server Compatible With Firefox

For years I have avoided using a proxy server but after some concern that someone who I don't trust has knowledge of my IP address I am considering using a proxy server to avoid issues like IP spoofing, computer hacking, transmission eavesdropping, etc. Can anyone recommend an easy-to-use proxy server (whether free or subscription) that is readily compatible with Firefox?

Having knowledge of your IP address isn't enough to hack your PC, there is alot more that goes into it. Make sure you have your computer up to date with all software, firewall, anti-virus, etc.

Would having a proxy server still help prevent against IP address spoofing and someone eavesdropping on unencrypted transmissions? (I actually write a lot about organized crime so I'm just trying to take some precautionary measures.)

What type of internet service do you have?
i.e., dial-up, cable, DSL or ?

Do you have a fixed IP address?
Most broadband providers use "dynamic" assignment of IP address via DHCP, so you may not always have the same IP address. Those DHCP assigned IP addresses usually expire in 72 hours, so if you wouldn't use your PC from that connection for 3 days chances are your IP address may have been automatically changed.

And you might want to check with your ISP to find out if you can change your IP address via a "refresh".
