How does a web site know the location of my computre?
Some web sites, those I have not visited before, show the city where I am located. How does that happen and how do I turn it off?
Chosen solution
This is more likely caused by a reverse DNS look up of your IP address.

For using Geolocation you always need to confirm that you want to share your location.

Firefox makes use of a feature called Geolocation, which uses your IP address to "locate" where you are.
This is good for looking for restaurants, where to park and so on.
You can turn geolocation off for certain website by:
- Navigate to the site to which you've given permission
- Go to the Tools menu, then select Page Info
- Select the Permissions tab
- Change the setting for Share Location
However, if you wish to turn off geolocation completely:
- In the URL bar, type about:config
- Type geo.enabled
- Double click on the geo.enabled preference
- Location-Aware Browsing is now disabled

hello jbrener, websites can also approximate your location by the ip address your ISP is assigning to you - there's no way around that (without using a vpn service or a proxy which disguises your ip address).
