I'm not very familiar with Windows 8, but is there a taskbar like Windows 7 where running programs have a "button"? If you can see a button for Firefox but no window, the window might be off-screen. In that scenario, could you try the trick described in this thread and see whether it works for you: When I go to open firefox it shows up on my tool bar but not on my screen where is it?

If Firefox never appears on the task bar, it might be hanging before it fully starts up. Can you see it on the Processes tab of the Task Manager (assuming that still exists: Ctrl+Shift+Esc)? Maybe something here would help in that case: Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix.

Any luck?
