Can't access website, but other browsers can

Posted

I cannot access usbank.com via Firefox even though I can on Internet Explorer. It was working fine until the last 2 days or so.

I have looked through your page: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-cant-load-websites-other-browsers-can

But none of those solve my problem. I also have reset my connection, and uninstalled then reinstalled Firefox.

hello, please see the reply from jscher2000 in the following thread: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/953639 - he found out that the bank is somehow blocking the firefox 19 useragent. please also report this issue to the support section of the bank...

Question owner

Worked like a charm. Can't believe I got so mad as to delete all my Firefox settings over the website's fault. They will have a long message from me.

A website can't block a particular user agent string of a browser. Microsoft.com is experiencing the same issue with a combination of Windows 7 and FF 19.0.2. This is a browser issues, not a website issue.

It worked today, Sat 3/16, but one never knows when USBank will figure out how to trash open source software everywhere.

How can you make a blanket statement that this company is somehow trying to "trash open source software everywhere" when users of a brand new version of Firefox are having issues accessing the site? This is not the only example of sites having issues with FireFox 19.0.2 and Windows7. It seems clear there is an issue with the particular useragent string that FireFox uses on this new version of the browser, rather than a company targeting open source software. How long will it take for FireFox to fix this issue?

As far as I can tell, the only difference is that the two 8's changed to two 9's. Anyone can individually override their useragent string, but since some websites may rely on an accurate identification, I don't think it makes sense to roll it back for everyone just because one or two websites are behaving oddly.

It is now Monday March 18 at 08:33 and www.usbank.com is not answering me. There is no error message. There is simply no reply.

You requested more detail. Below are the results of a successful login yesterday using an address I found in old records. Note the User-Agent that Firefox is sending. It is a rather new version. Others think that connection will occur correctly if the "19" is replaced by "18" to match your test code. There was no connection so there were no error codes delivered by US Bank.
