Sigh. There is such a cacophony of solutions to fix Java install problems that even a savvy user becomes lost. The last solution posted for Java install problems relates to Java v7 u10. The solution doesn't even indicate the version of Firefox they're running. This is March 2013. The last solution was posted Sept. 2012.

Frankly, I'm very, very disappointed. I love Firefox -- but someone has dropped / is dropping the ball on this one.

What on earth is the solution to Firefox version 19.0.2 not recognizing an install of Java version 7, update 17?

Does anyone in the community KNOW?

Out of all the solutions posted regarding Java install problems, I gleaned one thing: A re-install of Java and a re-install of Firefox may well solve the problem.

Well, for me, thus far, it has.

The simple steps I followed:

1. Create Restore Point (Control Panel, search "Create Restore Point") 2. Uninstall my version of Java (Control Panel, "Uninstall a program") 3. Reboot 4. Download Firefox latest version (for me, was version 19.0.2, into my Downloads folder) 5. Download AND install latest Java (right now, version 7, update 17 @java.com) 6. reboot 7. Install latest Firefox (double-click on "Firefox Setup 19.0.2" application in my Downloads folder) 8. Started Firefox (NOTE: my current extensions and plugins were not affected) and went to my favorite website which requires Java. 9. THANK GOODNESS, it worked! (NOTE: it did keep asking me if I wanted to RUN THIS APPLICATION) . I hope this works for you.

(Technical Note: From all the solutions posted I did take note that it becomes evident Registry entries are not updated, or are removed. The re-installation of Java (after removal and reboot) and the re-installation of Firefox solved "my" problem).
