Can't open links in new window. Nothing happens

Can't open multiple windows of Firefox by clicking on the shortcut in my task bar. Nothing happens. One and only one window of Firefox is all I get no matter what I try.

Can't open Firefox at all after I close the only window I'm now allowed to have. Nothing happens. I have to go to task manager and end the Firefox background process that's still in the list. Then I can open Firefox again.

Here's my system info:

hello, please reset firefox - this should take care of the problem...

OK, I reset Firefox 2 days ago. It fixed the problem and things were going fine until just now. A few hours ago Firefox worked fine. I took a break, just came back, and it's doing the same thing again: can't open new window from a link, can't open new Firefox instance from taskbar, Firefox process remains in Task Manager list after I shut the browser down, so I have to end the process before I can start the browser again.

Am I going to have to reset Firefox (and reinstall extensions, reset home page, etc., etc.) EVERY COUPLE OF DAYS? If so I'D SAY YOU HAVE A BUG in the new release. Please fix it and send me a patch.

Thank you!

I notified you that your fix didn't work almost a week ago. No response. Please respond! Thanks.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

I have Kaspersky, but now you're fishing. Here's why:

I had Kaspersky installed on a Windows 8 laptop and used the previous version of Firefox without problem for the last 3 months.

The problems started ONLY AFTER Firefox upgraded to 19.0.

So, neither Kaspersky nor Windows caused the problems. The upgrade caused the problems.

If the upgrade caused the problems, changing Windows configuration is a detour, not a solution. If Firefox 19 needs Safe Mode in order to function properly, then FIREFOX IS THE PROBLEM.

Please send me instructions on how to reinstall the version BEFORE Firefox 19 so that I can use the browser without these problems. IT WORKED FINE BEFORE THE UPDATE!

When you have fixed the version 19 problems, I'll be glad to reinstall the update.

Thank you.

if you heave any speedbit software on your pc, try to remove it...

I'm a Chrome user by choice. I use Firefox for two reasons only:

1) Speedbit video downloader 2) A second browser to handle secondary Google and Facebook sign-ins.

If I remove Speedbit, I lose 50% of my reason to use your browser at all.

Speedbit and Firefox worked together just fine before version 19.

PLEASE PROVIDE A PATCH. DON'T BLAME SPEEDBIT.

Thank you.

Patching starts with a thorough diagnosis.

When you restart Firefox after killing firefox.exe, does it work normally? For how long? Can you confirm that it is a compatibility problem with Speedbit? Can you determine what triggers the problem, since it appears to be intermittent?

jscher2000, glad to clarify thoroughly. ;-)

As my original post indicated, there are multiple problemS:

1. Can't open links in new window. Nothing happens

2. Can't open multiple windows of Firefox by clicking on the shortcut in my task bar. Nothing happens. One and only one window of Firefox is all I get no matter what I try.

3. Can't open Firefox at all after I close the only window I'm now allowed to have. Nothing happens. I have to go to task manager and end the Firefox background process that's still in the list. Then I can open Firefox again.

Problems #1 and #2 are NOT intermittent, but incessant.

Problem #3 USUALLY happens, although not always. The problem isn't intermittent, but the rule. Success is intermittent.

Q: When you restart Firefox after killing firefox.exe, does it work normally?

A: As stated, if I kill the process in Task Manager, I can start Firefox and actually get the UI to show.

Q: For how long?

A: For one session. After I close the Firefox UI, AS A RULE, I can't open it again until Task Manager/KILL FIREFOX. (How I'm feeling right now. Just sayin'.)

Q: Can you confirm that it is a compatibility problem with Speedbit?

A1: I disabled Speedbit Video Downloader. Problems 1-3 still happened.

A2: I KILLED FIREFOX in Task Manager, then started it back up. Problems 1-3 no longer occur, even after several open-close cycles. I can open new windows/instances of the UI to my heart's content! WHOOPEE!

A3: The problem definitely seems to be a Firefox 19.0/Speedbit compatibility problem.

A4: I enabled Speedbit Video Downloader and restarted Firefox. Problems 1-3 reappeared.

A patch would be appreciated. In the meantime I can adopt the WORKAROUND (the recurring reminder of a software problem, hint, hint) of keeping Speedbit Video Downloader disabled, enabling it whenever I need to download something, then disabling it again.

I'll mark this ticket "solved" when I get the patch, thanks! :-)

Ok, so this is an issue with Speedbit. Please report to spedbit, and leave it disabled until they release an update. Thanks!
