I uninstalled FF, deleted the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox, and then installed Firefox 19.0 downloaded today (2/27/2013). It still crashes on startup, every time. Runs fine in safe mode. In safe mode I go to Tools | Addons and disable stuff, but it doesn't stay disabled. Also deleted pluginreg.dat and addons.sqlite from my default profile folder. Running Windows 7, up to date with latest patches.

Turning off hardware acceleration worked. But why has it worked for several years, and suddenly now must be turned off??

Windows released an update which broke Hardware acceleration in Firefox. Until it's fixed you'll have to turn it off in Firefox.
