Yesterday Firefox (v18) kept crashing, tried rebooting my system, etc. and it would work ok for a while, then slow down over time and then crash. Updated to v19 which worked alright for a bit, then started crashing over and over again. It would crash, I'd restart Firefox, it would crash again, etc. It didn't matter what website I was on, it would crash on anything. Gmail, Yahoo news, Facebook, blogs, forums, everything. At one point I wasn't even using FF, the browser was open in the background while I was working on a Word document, and it crashed. I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials and just ran a scan which came up clean. Also ran Microsoft Safety Scanner which was also clean.

Here are the crash reports I got yesterday...

After updating to v19:

So far it's been OK today but I just wanted to see if anyone could help me figure out what was up with it yesterday.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

Everything is OK in Safe Mode. Yesterday I disabled hardware acceleration and it helped speed up the browser but then today it was enabled again... I'm not sure why?
