Bookmarks are in your Profile Folder in a file named places.sqlite.
To open your Profile Folder, Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Folder > Show Folder.

I am a computer illiterate. The answers provided are extremely vague to an old person like me . I need a detailed response as to how can I save my bookmarks to my "C" drive & a portable drive so in case I had to re image my computer I will not loose them. Also, I need to transfer these bookmarks to another computer I bought recently. Please help. Thanks a million.
- Open your Profile Folder. In Firefox, click Help > Troubleshooting Information, in the Troubleshooting Information display, to the right of "Profile Folder" click "Show Folder. A window will open with the contents (files and folders) of your Firefox Profile.
- In the open window showing your Profile, right-click on the file places.sqlite and choose copy.
- Open the drive letter for your portable drive in My Computer. Another window will open with the contents (files and folders) of that drive. Navigate to where you want to save the file (i.e. to an existing folder or on the root of that drive), then, right-click in that window and choose "Paste". The file places.sqlite should appear in that window.
- Open drive C in My Computer and repeat the process in step 3, above. No need to copy the file again as it is still on the Windows clipboard.
For steps 2 - 4 above you can, instead of right-clicking, highlight the file (single-click, not double-click), choose Edit from the menu in the My Computer window and choose Copy, move to the window where you wish to make a copy, click Edit in the My Computer window, choose Paste.
Firefox stores the bookmarks and the browser history in places.sqlite and no longer uses an HTML file or creates an HTML backup for the bookmarks.
There are 10 daily rotating JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder within the Firefox profile folder, one for each day that Firefox is started.
You can make Firefox create an automatic HTML backup (bookmarks.html) when you exit Firefox if you set the browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML pref to true on the about:config page.
That backup is created by default in the profile folder as bookmarks.html, but you can set the file name and path via the browser.bookmarks.file pref on the about:config page.
The browser.bookmarks.file pref doesn't exist by default and you need to create a new String pref with the name browser.bookmarks.file and set the value to the full path of the backup bookmarks file.
Is that post really necessary since OP just wants to know how to backup his/her bookmarks in case of a problem?
My method is simply to open the bookmark window from Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks, click "Import and Backup", choose Backup, and in the box that pops up, choose a location (on the hard drive) for the backup to go. I copy that backup to a flash stick afterwards.
