Firefox 18.0 running on Mac 10.6.8: Error message "Well, this is embarrassing."


My computer recently upgraded to Firefox 18.0, and since then Firefox has been usable. With every link, I get a revolving, multi-colored wheel and, eventually, the following error message:

Well, this is embarrassing.

         Firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is usually caused by a recently opened web page.
          You can try:          
           Removing one or more tabs that you think may be causing the problem
           Starting an entirely new browsing session

I can't figure out how to fix the problem. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks.

Try the Firefox Safe Mode to see how it works there. The Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open the Firefox 4.0+ Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or use the Help menu item and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Don't select anything right now, just use "'Start in Safe Mode" To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shift key) to open it again. If it is good in the Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.

Thank you very much for your carefully stated response to my question. It was very helpful advice. I went through the first steps. The best start was going into "Safe Mode." (I wasn't even aware of that feature.) I then had to go through the "Troubleshoot extensions . . ." link that you provided. The first step did not work -- and, I'm afraid, time was running out because of my office schedule. I quickly -- probably too quickly -- went to the "reset" option.

That worked fine . . . and went Firefox came back on, all my tabs and history and bookmarks were there. One problem? Zotero disappeared. But I figured out how to restore the program AND get all my files back on the system.

Time-consuming . . . but Firefox is now working. I'm very grateful for your assistance.

I have the same problem (i.e. the error message: "Well, this is embarrassing. Firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is usually caused by a recently opened web page"). I tried the solution above, i.e. start in safe mode, and I keep getting the same error message even when in safe mode. This all started after I upgraded to version 20. (I am on a MacBook Air running OS X 10.8.3)

I started the same problem after upgrading to firefox 20 and I use no extensions. It happens everytime I start up. I tried safe mode - no good. I am not sure what to do next. I am a senior citizen and I would love a reliable answer that is not in "techlish"

Don't know if bug fixed or if just using Quit on IMAC instead of just closing the window, but I have not had a problem in 2 days. Will have to try close instead of quit and see if it is still a problem
