I today had the problem that after trying to upgrade Java 7 U10 to Java 7 U11, that the Java Platform (TM) completely disappears from the Add-ons manager. I was also not able to use any websites anymore the require the Java add-on.

Tried everything ... tried to install the Java 7 U11 update three times, completely uninstalled all java versions and installed them again, also re-installed Firefox 18, but nothing solved the problem. It also had nothing to do that mozilla disabled the java these days because of a security risk, or because of things like NoScript that I run. It´s simply not been possible anymore to get the Java plugin running in Firefox. Also deleting the plugin.reg and rebuilding it doesnt help at all.

I have seen that there have been two threads in the forum before:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/924704 with 339 people having this problem, but the thread was closed 3 months ago with no solution

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/861922 with 203 people having this problem, but the thread was closed 11 months ago, also with no solution

It´s still the same problem, but also an extensive search on google did not show any solution to this problem. So, this is still an open problem, and unfortunately the two previous forum posts have been closed.

However, I found out the solution to the problem, so i post it here so it may help other people, too:

The JavaPlugin is not registered in the registry. And even uninstalling and installing Java will not add it to the registry again.

Solution:

In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MozillaPlugins, a new branch with the name @java.com/JavaPlugin,version=10.11.2 needs to be created,

with the following 7 keys:

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)

Description REG_SZ Oracle® Next Generation Java™ Plug-In

GeckoVersion REG_SZ 1.9

Path REG_SZ C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\plugin2\npjp2.dll

ProductName REG_SZ Oracle® Java™ Plug-In

Vendor REG_SZ Oracle Corp.

Version REG_SZ 1.7.0_11

The entries are going to be different for each java version (this one is for Java 7 U11) and for your personal install path, but what you can do is to copy the registry keys from another machine that runs the same java version that you want to use (for example from your notebook or from a virtual machine) by exporting them from that machine, and importing them to the machine that has the problem.

It fixed the problem on my machine, java plug-in runs fine again.

I hope this is going to help some hundred people having the same problem, so I am glad to publish it in the forum. Not all users will be able to find a solution to this problem. It would be great if an admin could add a link to this post under the two previous posts that were closed, where no solutions has been posted, so people going there via google can find the solution in this thread.

Thank you so much, this resolved my problem with the missing Java 7 Update 11 plugin in Firefox. I took your advice and copied them from another machine, modified the path, backed up the registry, created a restore point, then imported the registry keys.

Here is the list of the keys I imported from another working machine onto my Windows 7 32 bit machine. I also had this problem with Java 7 Update 10. Thanks Oracle.

This is an export of the registry keys ... Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Note that there is a Java 7 Update 12 pending to address issues caused by missing registry keys.

The more people that report this to Java, the more likely (And more expediently) the problem will be fixed. See here for reporting the issue to them (I already have): http://bugreport.sun.com/bugreport/main.jsp

Also I have the 7 keys the original poster mentioned, but the plugin still isn't detected by Firefox.

Also I use a 64bit version of Windows and have both 32bit and 64bit versions of Java 7.11 installed and the registry key specifying the path, specifies the path to the 64bit java folder... so I changed it (I use 32bit Firefox) from "C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\plugin2\npjp2.dll" to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\plugin2\npjp2.dll" but that also didn't resolve the issue.

The Java Deployment Toolit loads, but not the Runtime component.

The first line of the .reg file for Java 7 Update 11 should be Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 followed by a blank line, as follows, for 32-bit Windows ([HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MozillaPlugins\@java.com/JavaPlugin,version=10.11.2] is all one line)

Me (original poster) just looked there, I can confirm that I also had JavaFX 2.1 installed on the machine that had problems. However, I also have JavaFX 2.1 on another machine, and the update to Java 7 U11 had no problems there. But the link you have posted is a valuable information, thanks.

I have the same problem installing J7U11 on Win 8 32-bit with Opera browser (as well as FF) - Opera does not recognize the install either. At same time on same machine IE9 has no problem. I hope Oracle fixes the issue for FF, Opera, and presumably all other browsers that depend on the Mozilla Java plug-in dll.

I uninstalled JavaFX after installing J7U11 on Win 7 32-bit and problem was immediately fixed - both IE9 and FireFox java add-ons are updated. However, no joy on Win 8 32-bit, even after several J7U11 install/uninstall cycles.

This looks like wonderful information, and probably contains the solution to my problem. However, I am not an IT professional, and the solution might as well be written in Egyptian Hieroglyphics. I am clueless what to do with the information. Can someone dumb it down a bit?

Just download the latest version of Java and install it. The developers of Java have already fixed the issue.

To avoid confusion:

Make sure that you do not block JavaScript.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
