Can't install Java 7 update 11 on Firefox 18.0

Posted

I had Java 7 update 10, which has the 0-day exploit. Oracle released Java 7 update 11. I installed that and uninstalled Java 7 update 10. Now I can't get Firefox to recognize Java. It tells me that Java needs to be installed, but when I try to install the plug in (Java has been installed twice now), it fails. Now I have no Java.

Chosen solution

Removing the JavaFX from add/remove programs fixed the problem.

Thank you all for your help (I found that in the blog entries that the last person linked to).

Try using http://ninite.com/java/ninite.exe to install Java

Question owner

I clicked on the link and McAfee told me that it is a malicious site.

ninnite isn't malicious, I use it every day (including this morning) :) But if you don't want to use it, don't.

in some instances firefox may not be able to detect that the java plugin is installed, because oracle made an error in registering the java plugin for mozilla-based browsers in version 7u10 & 7u11... this will apparently just be fixed with its next release.

http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=8005410

for a workaround see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#Add_back_missing_registry_key

Chosen Solution

Removing the JavaFX from add/remove programs fixed the problem.

Thank you all for your help (I found that in the blog entries that the last person linked to).

I am having the same trouble with Windows 7 Premium 32 bit after following the advise of the link here: https://blog.mozilla.org/security/2013/01/11/protecting-users-against-java-vulnerability/

I have upgraded to Java 7u11 as suggested, however when I visit a one of my own sites to test I am told I need an additional plugin which is the plugin for 7u10 (which won't work of course because I upgraded).

Plugin page shows I am "up to date."

Works in IE9 only...FF, Chrome and Opera all fail with the missing plugin notice, which is the old plugin, not the one needed (apparently) for 7u11.

So what do I do now!

There is a Java 7 Update 12 pending to address issues regarding missing registry keys.

Hello cor-el--

I did manage to get Java 7u11 installed, but I have no certain idea exactly how. After 20 to 30 attempts, reading everything here on the support forums and elsewhere, trying to use JavaRa and essentially breaking my system and doing a system restore, I finally got it installed. My FF plugins showed the Java Toolkit but would not recognize the Java RunTime Environment.

I should have tried the advise in http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#Windows_installation_issues and deleted the pluginreg.dat as I saw on a different 5 page thread you advised another FF user, but alas, by the time I read that I had already "mysteriously" fixed the issue. Also I had no JavaFX installed.

I am kind of dreading yet another Java 7 Update 12 install after what is becoming a notorious Java update issue.

Thank you for responding. It is always strange to finally get something fixed and have no idea how one did it. I do think, in retrospect, that it is a Java registry key problem (which I am reluctant to fool with) and a Java recognition of installed versions in Windows. Java's "Workaround for 7u11 and prior: Uninstall standalone version(s) of JavaFX" is just plain wrong as I did not have JavaFX.

On a final note, cor-el, it should be noted that Java's U11's "fix" is nothing more than the "click to play" block that FF already was using. Not much in a real sense of a security fix.

an edit: after reading more about the problem I remember this from the haze of downloads and uninstalls I did...at one point after using JavaRa I installed a 6 something version and a bit later, after finding out it wouldn't work (was blocked I think) I tried to use JavaRa again to uninstall the 6 something version. However it failed to remove it...though it said it had. It was still a listed program in my Control Panel. I tried to uninstall it from CP but received an error every time I tried (an inscrutable Windows error code). It was at this point I did a system restore to a point where 7u11 was at least working in IE9 but that failed to change the situation so it was then I tried installing 7u11 again and that is when it worked. I thought this might be useful when considering the registry problem with Java...and it is one of the things that is mentioned in one of the articles I read somewhere.

A solution I discovered was suggested by one of the MozillaZine knowledge base articles referenced in one of the prior replies.

I went to (64-bit Windows) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\MozillaPlugins\@java.com/JavaPlugin and discovered that the path to the java plugin was erroneous (c:\Program Files (x86)\java\jre7\bin\msiexe.exe\npjp2.dll). It should have been c:\Program Files (x86)\java\jre7\bin\plugin2\npjp2.dll.

Once I changed this entry, restarted the PC and went to a site that needed java I was prompted to install the Next Generation Java Plugin. I clicked on the appropriate button and viola, the plugin was installed.

BTW, I did not have JavaFX installed on my PC. Hope this helps some of you.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium - 64-bit and this is what worked for me a/o 1/30/13 I couldn't get my Smart Source Coupons to print after the last FF Java update.

I finally uninstalled all of Java by going to: 1. My Control Panel. 2. Programs and Features page 3. Down to Java programs and when you click on them you will be asked if you want to uninstall. I said yes.

Next I went to Java.com and followed instructions to install: Java 7 Update 11 AND Java 7 Update 11 (64 bit)

On The FF Tools Tab, then Add-Ons and then clicking on Plug-ins tab I have: 1. Java Deployment Toolkit for latest Java SE7.0.110.21 10.11.2.21 AND 2. Java TM Platform SE 7 U11 10.11.2.21 (BOTH ENABLED)

When I started the print for the coupons FF had a red pop up that asked if I wanted to allow the print, etc. I said yes to both questions. All I know is this worked for me and I struggled with it last night and this am. Between IE and FF and Java . YIKES!!!!

A miracle happened today. I found the message in the system tray saying that a update of Java was available. I thought, "here we go again" but clicked the link and updated and ended up with Java 7U13 installed. Checked FF plugins an lo and behold, everything actually went the way it was supposed to. I didn't go to Java or Oracle or download through a browser anything, just let the system Windows 7 Premium do the work. Either Oracle finally got it's act together or whether it was just better to try updates through the Java Icon in control panel I can't say.

Hope this helps someone...though it would be sweet if no help is needed by anyone. ;-)

jmcg 1 solutions 11 answers

The update didn't work for me. I still had to go into the registry and fix the path variable to get the plugin to install and work.

There is no JAVA/FX in the add / remove - also cannot even remove the JAVA that is listed!!1 Thanks for any help

shirleyone 0 solutions 14 answers

If you want to remove the Java you have and you are using a PC with Windows you go to the Control Panel: Click on Programs and Features: Go to where your Java program(s) is/are and click on them: It will ask if you want to remove.

Then you need to go to Java online. Let it test for Java and it will tell you what to download. HTH Hop this helps. :-)

I had Windows XP before I bought this one. It has Windows 7 Home Premium and had been doing well...............so far ;-) I Googled Java for Windows XP SP3 and found this page:

It looks like you need to download the Java for Windows 32 bit.
