How to get rid of an unintentionally installed search "tab" when updating the new version of Java JRE?

Posted

Since Oracle surprisingly quickly announced an update of Java JRE (Update 7.11) , available todag Jan 14, I naturally installed it. In spite of being very careful with all the junk program providers try to impose on the innocent user, I still got a f*ck*ng tab-alike search thing in my tab row. I don't want or need it and it takes up valuable space. The evil rats who created this stinking sh*t have been very careful about to hide every simple way of removing it - it is not (as far as I can see) to be found anywhere in my lists of add-ons or extensions. I've tried to look into about:config, but I'm totally inexperianced with that and don't dare to make any alterations: in fact I didn't find anything usable.

Anyone who has a suggestion how to get rid of this qualified junk? My FF is the Swedish version, thats why I pasted raw data in the Troubleshooting Information. If there had been an option here of adding a screen capture of the thing, I would have done so.

Chosen solution

Does the tab look like the image below? If so, you did not get that from a Java update. Did you download the Java update from the Java site or elsewhere? It was expected that some less than honest persons would be offering fake Java updates. If it looks like the image below, do the following:

  1. With all browsers closed, in Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features (or Add or Remove Programs), if you see "Default Tab" remove it (You do have Default Tab 1.4.3 in the list of add-ons/prefs that you submitted with your question)
  2. Start Firefox and verify that "Default Tab" is not in Add-ons > Extensions; if it is click to "Remove" then restart Firefox.
  3. You may need to set your home page in Firefox if a search page leading to "Search Results" or "My Search Results" appears when starting Firefox - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/How%20to%20set%20the%20home%20page
  4. You may need to remove "Search Results" or "My Search Results" from your list of installed search engines in the Search Bar in the upper right (click on the image at the left end of the Search Bar and choose "Manage Search Engines") - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/search-bar-easily-choose-your-search-engine#w_removing-a-search-engine
  5. You may need to reset your default search engine used in the Location/URL bar search by resetting the preference keyword.URL - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/search-web-address-bar#w_changing-the-internet-keyword-service
  6. You may need to reset a preference if "Search Results" or "My Search Results" is appearing as a search engine every time you open a new tab (follow steps 1-4 below the image to determine what opens when you click to open a new tab; see about:config usage above) - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-tab-page-show-hide-and-customize-top-sites#w_how-do-i-turn-the-new-tab-page-off

hello, try to uninstall the "DAP Link Checker" addon & afterwards install the search reset addon - it will revert the most common customziations those adware programs do in firefox back to the default: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/

Helpful Reply

Sorrry, it didn't help. But thanks anyway. I think I'll try to contact Oracle about this.

Banish this irritant via the Control Panel; make your way to Programs (Uninstall a Program) ----> Programs and Features, and click to activate. Next click on the "Installed On" header column to see which programs have recently sneaked themselves onto your system. For me the culprit, of the search thing in my tab row, had the program name of "Default Tab" and was published by a company named "Search Results, LLC." Your irritant may have a different name, nonetheless just right click on its icon and and select uninstall. Restart Firefox and test by opening new tabs with the shortcut key Ctrl+T. This ought to fix this pest for you. Hope it helps.
