Tried to load: www.powned.tv, displays some advertorial site (the ones that replace outdated websites), while showing 'www.powned.tv' in url. Happened earlier today as well, on a reboot later it was ok, now it's doing it again. Checked phone browser, site works correctly, reinstalled firefox, problem stays.

And on the final check before clicking 'post', it's working again.

I have little experience in linux and don't know where to start looking for this.

Firefox 17.0.1 on Ubuntu 12.10

edit: problem occured again, got a screenshot

Edit: now i got it on my phone as well, whatever it is, it's not firefox. Thanks for your answer though!!

Chosen solution

Ran into the same problem, on all browsers and phones.

It seems that Powned forgot to extend the domain name with the registrar.

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

screenshot:

safe mode made no difference (problem, though random, appeared again)

If it was on Windows then I would suspect malware, but that is not likely on Linux.

What are the connection settings?

Are you using a bookmark or do you type the URL in the location bar?
Do you have any idea which website gets loaded?

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Edit > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

PowNed should be working now.
If it isn't the case then try to clear the Firefox cache or use "Forget About This Site" or reboot the computer or reset the router in case DNS settings are cached.

You can try to reset (power off/on) the router.

the random events tricked me into thinking it was the browser, didn't know where to look for that

at first nobody at the website referred to to problem, so i thought it wasn't them either

thanks for the help, problem solved / never existed
