firefox does not offer socks5 authentication

I have created my own proxy server and firefox will not send the correct method information. A socks5 method ident/selection packet is structured so that it sends the initial version information and the number of methods.

I get version - 5, nmethods - 1 (should be around 3)

when I cycle through the methods, authentication is not available, only unsecured access to the proxy is available. I have tried this with putty using socks5 with username/password specified and it works. Does anyone know how to fix this?
