Firefox profile cannot be loaded.


Everytime I try to open Firefox, I get the message that the profile is missing. It may be inaccessible or missing. It appears that others have had this problem, yet nothing in the help questions have solved the problem. I really do not want to switch to Explorer. I might have to move to Chrome if you can't help me.

I tried to uninstall something when I was having problems with a pop up that I needed to get access somewhere.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

OK, that worked. I'm still having trouble (even following the links you posted) to transfer my bookmarks. There is a folder on my desktop that is labeled with Old Firefox Data. How do I get my bookmarks from there (I cannot click on them to open) to my "new" profile.

You need to copy the place.sqlite file from the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop to the current Firefox Profile Folder or restore the bookmarks from a JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder
