No matter what I do, Firefox will only open the https:// version of ANY site. When I look at my extensions and plugins, I don't see anything that would be causing this, but it's very frustrating. Any ideas?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

You can set the Boolean pref browser.urlbar.autoFill to false on the about:config page to disable auto-complete.

See "Prevent Firefox from automatically completing URLs":

You can set the browser.urlbar.trimURLs pref to false on the about:config page to see the http: protocol on the location bar and in the pop-up at the bottom if you hover a link.
