Does this affect all sites that use Java, or only one particular site?

What version of Java do you have? You can check on this test page:

http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp

Please note that some security vulnerabilities in Java have been reported in the media recently, but Oracle has not announced an official position on what users should do. If you do not currently have Java 7 installed, you might want to install Java 6.

To access my project related sites I am by passing proxy.

When you say you are bypassing proxy, do you mean you are using a service like a private VPN? I don't know how that would affect your applet. If the bypass operates at the system level, all traffic should be captured. If it is implemented using a Firefox add-on, maybe that isn't the case?? Can you use an external proxy like Fiddler2 to see whether the Java plugin is communicating as you want/expect?

Yes we are using VPN. I can can't use Fiddler2 to test thatas There is some security issue w.r.t my company

I have a similar problem - my Applet opens in all borwsers - IE 9, Opera, Chrome, only doesn't open in Firefox. It asks for a particular Java plug-in 1.6.0_12 and I have the latest version 6 patch installed - 1.6.0.39. Is there a way to make Firefox ignore the plug-in required and run the one it has available?

If possible then please post a link to the site with that Java applet.

Try to clear the Java cache.

Control Panel > Java > General tab > "Temporary Internet Files" > Settings > Delete Files

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

The site with the applet is accessed through corporate VPN, so I can not post it here. Clearing the cache doesn't help. Is there simply a way to tell firefox to use the latest Java plug in installed, regardless of what the Applet wants it to use. IE 9 does this by default, no settings required.

Is this message really coming from Firefox or from Java?

If Firefox blocks a plugin then you usually see special icon on the location bar to unblock the plugin.

Applets should be downward compatible, so there shouldn't be a problem to run that applet unless it does some advanced checking that makes it fail.

Firefox doesn't block the plug-in. It states "A plugin is needed to display this content". And when I click install, it shows - "No suitable plugins were found."

That means that the Java plugin isn't installed properly and Firefox doesn't find it via a scan.

See:

Try to uninstall the current Java version and reinstall the latest Java 6U39 or 7U13 version.

You can find the latest Java version on the Oracle website.

See Java Platform > Java SE 7U13 and Java 6U39 (Download JRE)

Thank you for your help and suggestions but I don't think this will help as Java is installed on a fresh copy of Windows 7 pro and Java works just fine on all other sites I have needed it to, applet included. The only problem is that the business applet is written to require a certain version of the plugin to be run and when it is not found, Firefox thinks it doesn't have any suitable plugin to run it. IE 9 ignores the MIME command about the plugin version and runs the Applet with whatever it finds suitable installed. A pity there is no such a way to configure Firefox to work.

Firefox needs a 32 bit Java version in case you only have a 64 bit Java version installed.

No, I have a 32 bit Java as my Windows is 32 bit.
