07-30-12, I have been trying for 2 days to install Flashplayer 11.3 for FF but it simply fails. No error messages, no "close the following apps that are using Flash in order to install", no crash report, no confirmation of installation, simply nothing. I can download the installer from the Adobe website, but when I Run it, it simply makes the monitor blink, then removes the executable that I just downloaded. I have run the Uninstaller each time it fails and it acts like it has uninstalled something, but, it acts that way when I run it again right after running it--what is it uninstalling IF it HAS "successfully uninstalled" Flash?

Win 7 Starter netbook was running the previous Flash plugins fine until I had to uninstall it (via Control Panel/Programs--something happened I can't remember right now; it was not an ActiveX version either).

It broke my HP Solutions Center software (which reallllllly sux) right in the middle of printing an RMA. Of course. So since HP requires the IE version of Flash even though I never ever use IE, I was forced to use IE to download the ActiveX version of Flash 11.3. That worked and at least HP is now working again. But oh come ON.

I cannot get the Firefox version to install. Period. No way to watch videos until Firefox and/or Adobe fixes this. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

There are 2 versions of Adobe Flash:

  • an ActiveX version for IE only
  • a Plugin version for most other browsers including Firefox
  • On a Windows system, you should always update both individually.

You do not appear to have the Plugin version for Firefox installed. If you did, in Add-ons > Plugins you would see "Shockwave Flash (version)".

Install or update Adobe Flash

  1. Using Firefox, go to the following link and SAVE the download to your desktop so you can find it later. Un-check any items on that page that you do not want to download (i.e., "McAfee Security Scan Plus":
  2. When the download is finished, close Firefox (File > Exit OR Firefox button > Exit)
  3. Click or double-click on the file you just saved to your desktop
    • In the installation window that appears, click the box to the left of "I have read and...." to place a check mark in the box
    • The "Install" button in the lower right corner will now be highlighted, click it.
    • The installation is quick.
  4. Start Firefox and test your installation here: https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
  5. To update/install the ActiveX version for IE only', repeat the process, but use IE to go to the above website.

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if installing Flash works in that case.

It is not generally advised to install software in Windows Safe Mode. Only a small subset of the Windows operating system is loaded in Safe Mode. Some software will not install at all in Safe Mode. Some users installing software in Safe Mode have ended up with problems "down the road".

If you can not install software in regular Windows mode, that may indicate a problem with your Windows installation which needs to be investigated, sometimes by a professional.

You may sometimes be advised to un-install in Windows Safe Mode when a program will not otherwise un-install, but the un-install is not as complete.

To SafeBrowser: Thanks! It was the "plain" flash installer at the ...installation-problems-... link that worked. Whew. Thanks so much Safe, I appreciate it.
