... and read the bookmarks.html file has the bookmarks. So I copy it to transfer. Read it and see NO bookmarks! Just a page with links... for help, contact us, etc. I thought I'd see my bookmarks. Are they hidden behind a link in code? Should I just copy over the file and see what happens?

bookmarks.html was used in very old versions of Firefox. (like 5 years ago) :)

This support article should cover what you want: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-up-bookmarks-or-move-them-to-another-computer

It's a great opportunity to try the Sync feature too.

Did you create an HTML backup?

  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Export HTML

You will have to import that HTML file in the new profile (or other computer).

You can also place a JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder and remove the other files in the bookmarkbackups folder.
You need to delete the places.sqlite file(s) or restore the bookmarks from the JSON backup.

  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore > Choose File

Firefox will only use a bookmarks.html file in the Firefox Profile Folder to initialize the bookmarks if places.sqlite is missing and if there are also no JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder.
