My Firefox has been crashing randomly and frequently for over a month now. I have tried running Firefox with all my plugins disabled but it still happens. I have tried using older Firefox versions but to no avail. My Windows has all the updates installed and I have done full system scans for viruses and spyware. When using Chrome I have no issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hello, thanks for providing the ids - according to the associated bug report the crashes are triggered by the estonian id-card software on your pc - there seems to be an new software version available that apparently fixes the crashes, please install it from : https://installer.id.ee/?lang=eng

edit: sorry the update doesn't seem to fix all crashes. in case you don't depend on the smartcard software please uninstall it and/or remove the "Estonain Id Card" module under security devices in windows device manager. for further developments you can keep an eye on bug #682839

maleake,

You seem to be having Trusteer Rapport installed.
That program can cause problems and crashes in Firefox.

You can try to stop Trusteer Rapport if installing the latest version doesn't help.

Start Menu > Programs > Trusteer Rapport > Stop Rapport

Thanks, cor-el. I've stopped Trusteer Rapport and will see if Firefox remains stable. I will report back the results once I know.

Trusteer Rapport seems to have been the culprit for me in making Firefox crash constantly. I've been up and running fine for quite awhile, now that it's been disabled. Thanks so much for the help!

@gfoidl

Does it help if you disable hardware acceleration?

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

@madperson: doesn't help @cor-el: it crashes even with hardware acceleration disabled

thanks for the fast reply!

Try the System File Checker to check if (font) files are missing or corrupted.

Open a cmd.exe window as Administrator:

  • Start, click Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

After the cmd.exe prompt, type: sfc.exe /scannow

SFC didn't find any problems - this did I expect, since the machine is only 2 days old. Anyway thanks for the hint.

I re-insalled FF, and now it seems to run stable. Maybe the problem was caused by a wrong copying the files in AppData from the old to the new machine.

When further problems occur, I'll post them here.

Thanks for the help.

As a follow up to my earlier problem: After stopping Rapport and having Firefox work fine, I wound up uninstalling Rapport altogether and then later reinstalling the current version. The latest version seems to work fine with Firefox 12.0. I haven't had any crashes so far after couple of days, whereas before it was crashing several times each day.

Unfortunately the linked crash reports are empty (@ EMPTY: no crashing thread identified; corrupt dump) and doesn't include any data, so it is not possible to find the cause of the crash.
