Why does Firefox fail downloads completely if sudden disconnection?

When downloading a large file, it is extremely annoying that Firefox fails (no option to continue) the transfer, if the connection for some reason or another fails or disconnects. All other download managers (and Opera) have a simple function to continue where it dropped.
