I'm running firefox 3.something, I think, and I keep trying to install the latest version on my mac. I go through saving it, opening it, dragging the icon to my apps file...and when I drag it to my apps file it takes a few seconds to do *something*, pings at me and then...nothing after that. I try to open it and it tells me I have to close firefox first, so I do (restart even) and when it opens again it still opens the old version.

Chosen solution

It sounds like you are trying to install the latest version by downloading it from the Mozilla website. What happens if you try and install it by choosing Firefox > About Firefox from the Menu bar? Does it even say that Firefox is not up to date?

Also, have you tried to uninstall Firefox using CleanMyMac or AppCleaner, for instance and then installing it again? Please do not do this until you are satisfied you have saved all the information you want to keep, first (passwords etcetera).

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop

  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.
