Firefox doesn't prompt to save passwords for sites. The key icon of the password manager appears on the left side of the address bar but the relevant window asking if I want to save the password or not, doesn't appear. I have tried every possible solution.

I have installed the latest version of Firefox on my laptop (Windows 7 professional 64-bit). The thing is that firefox doesn't prompt to save passwords for sites. I will explain you a little further by using an example: Assume that I load www.gmail.com. When I logged on, the key of the password manager appears on the left side of the address bar but the relevant window that would ask if I want to save the password or not, doesn't appear. I have tried every possible solution. It's true that when I restart firefox with add-ons disabled (safe mode), password manager works fine. But I don't really use any add-ons that would prevent firefox from saving passwords. I disabled all add-ons and ran firefox at normal mode but password manager didn't work again. Please bear in mind that I have tried everything and that no post published so far describes a case problem similar to mine. Consider that I even I configured the whole system from the beginning. The problem appeared again from the first time I launched firefox. At that time, I hadn't installed any antivirus software and there was no add-on along with firefox. Hope that somebody can provide me with some meaningful solution...

Chosen solution

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

It is possible that there is a problem with the files key3.db and signons.sqlite that store the encrypted names and passwords in Firefox.
Rename the files key3.db and signons.sqlite in the Firefox profile folder.
You can add .old to the file names (key3.db.old and signons.sqlite.old) or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.
If that has worked then you can remove the renamed files that are no longer needed.

Hello there,

Many thanks for your response :) Finally, the problem has been caused by the hardware acceleration. So I just disabled this feature and that's all. The thing is that I had already installed the latest version of the graphics driver, namely 285.62 WHQL for NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M. So I guess I have to disable hardware acceleration permanently. Another strange thing I observed is that after typing about:config and webgl.disabled, the value is false (expected) but when I typed about:support I saw that: WebGL Renderer -> Blocked for your graphics card because of unresolved driver issues. If there is any other suggestion to my problem without having hardware acceleration disabled, I would like to know about that... Thanks again for your meaningful input :))

I also have this issue on my Dell XPS 15 laptop with the Nvidia Geforce 540M and the temporary fix is turning off hardware acceleration. I do believe that this should only be a temporary fix and that the Mozilla developers should figure out a way to work around this or fix this hardware acceleration issue with the nvidia geforce 540m.

I was having the same problem as well. I found another workaround, which doesn't include disabling the hardware acceleration.

I own a Dell XPS 15 (and as derekmski, I also have a Geforce 540M), and the NVIDIA configuration panel allows me to pick which GPU should render a certain application, by default it's set to the IGP, but after changing that to the NVIDIA card, the password prompt showed up.

Although it seems a bit of a battery waster to use the card to render Firefox, so I suppose disabling hardware acceleration is still the way to go.
