My firefox is slowing down a lot because I have too many bookmarks

I have 2 user profiles, 1 is old and another is fresh clean just created. both contain same settings, same extensions, same everything except the bookmarks.

my browser runs too slowly on the old profile, doing anything from opening new tab/enter text/open download menu all takes at least a second or 2 for waiting. my bookmark toolbar is always open and it has tons of bookmarks in there too. the folder structure for the bookmarks are at least 3 level deep. I am not sure if this is caused by frequent "standby mode" that I usually put my computer in. sometimes standby affects memory allocation of applications and if I restart firefox my browser sometimes does get better but not by much.

how do I know how many bookmarks I should have before my browser starts slowing down? is there a way to decrease the memory focus on the bookmarks and allocate that to browser rendering instead?
