how to get homepage search to open results in another window?

Google search has the option of opening results in a new window. The Firefox start page used to have a search "preference" mini-menu, but that has disappeared, and I don't see any way to get the search to open new windows. It is very cumbersome to have to back out of each selection to continue with the original search.
