I start firefox using blank page as home. Why do I see firefox accessing random url's on start up via my content filter, with no visible sign it is doing so?

I recently installed firefox 5. I've notice no visible signs of tampering, MRT and MS security essentials report no virus/malware.

When I start firefox, it goes directly to a blank page as I want it to. I recently installed a content filter on my LAN that blocks all access to any website I have not explicitly allowed.

When firefox starts, the content filter logs accesses to one or two apparently random URL's, often ending in .de or .br etc. Starting IE on same machine results in no random URL access.

It appears that firefox has been compromised in some fashion, I can find no info online that matches my experience.
