how do I stop engine search being confined to the UK and not worldwide?

I want to be able to shop worldwide but cannot find a way to turn off the automatic assumption that I am only interested in doing so in the UK. This means that the same sites all UK keep appearing when I am trying to escape from them. What am I doing wrong and how do I change it?
