I just upgraded to 6 from 5. Did the same on my work computer which does not have this problem.

When I go to a new website, like creating an account here, I do not get prompted to save the password. When I go to a website that I have a saved password it does not enter it for me.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

  • You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
  • To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Deselect: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"
