when i go to a website or a link and the little pointer starts going around in a circle which says "loading", it never stops and at times doesn't load at all.
i often have to give up trying, or use Internet Explorer to finish the search

Does that only happen on a one website or on more or on all websites?
Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

"loading" search results never stops and at times doesn't load at all:
Change Google settings to get rid of "Google instant" Google: At the top of the Google search webpage is "settings" which brings up the page
- http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=en
- or for google.co.uk http://www.google.co.uk/preferences?hl=en
- (if you have cookies turned off you will get an error message at top
and you will not be able to save preferences when finishing)
and within that the radio button choices (one or the other must be selected).
- (_) Use Google Instant - predictions and results appear while typing
- (X) Do not use Google Instant
- Just as bad as slowing you down it limits the hits per page to 10 even
though you may ask for more in these preference settings. At the bottom of the page on the right side is a button "Save Preferences".
Those predictions are made by the search engine (Google, Yahoo, and others) and usually start once the 3rd character is typed. Google will return predictions based on the search patterns of others and of yourself what you would probably type next based on each character typed.
Another potential problem is Search suggestions, right-click in the Firefox search box and turn off "search suggestions" so it is unchecked.
These references tell what the Google extensions were about:
- Autocomplete : Features - Web Search Help
http://www.google.com/support/websearch/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=10...
Google Instant http://www.google.com/instant/
Since you are on 3.6 retest with those changes. If not working continue with the following changes.
Also Turn off these extensions if you have them and see if it works
- "AVG Safe" came in from AVG Free (should be blocked by blocklist)
- "McAfee Site Advisor" (should be blocked by blocklist)
- "Optimize Google"
- "GoogleEnhancer"
If that doesn't work, leave those extensions disabled try starting in Safe Mode. with one of these
- firefox.exe -safe-mode
- "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode
- "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode
In Safe Mode do not click on any of the checkmarks, they should all remain empty an click on the "Continue in Safe Mode":
If it works in Safe -- probably an extension but leave the above disabled and narrow down the extension by splitting as described in

Problem started when I upgraded to the latest version of Firefox. I downgraded to the previous version and the problem went away. At this point I will keep using the previous version until Firefox fixes the issue. I understand that the old version will stop being supported soon. If that happens before a solution is implemented I will go back to use Explorer. I don't have time to mess around.
