I don't know how to update. I saved the down load now what?

I am a novice at computing. I need a step by step procedure to update. When I got into Firefox it told me that the site wasn't save and I need to upload the latest version. I did and I don't know where the file got saved to and how to use the updated file. I have used Internet Explorer for a long time and I know nothing about this browser.

The Firefox 3.5.x branch has reached end-of-life and is no longer maintained.
You will no longer receive security updates for that Firefox version.
You can update Firefox via "Help > Check for Updates" or download and install the latest Firefox 3.6.x or 5.0.x version if updating doesn't work.
