The "new" version of the control bar does not appear, although about Firefox says that I am up to date.

App tabs now appear on the Add-on Bar at the bottom of Firefox

go to View Menu -> Toolbars -> select Add-on Bar

Check and tell if its working.

I have activated the add-on bar at the bottom, but the only thing there is "ad-block plus" The page does not look like that shown in the general instructions despite the fact that "About Firefox" shows that I have version 5.0.1.

its probably because some of the add-ons must have become incompatible with your version of Firefox. Check by going to Tools Menu -> Add-ons -> Extensions section

-> If the add-ons are in GREY with Exclamation mark then those add-ons are incompatible and you should REMOVE them.

-> If the add-ons are in GREY and Enable button is visible, then click Enable and Restart Firefox.

Check and tell if its working.

"Norton Confidential Toolbar" is listed as an incompatible extension, but also as disabled. To be sure. I turned off all the modules in Norton Confidential, but this didn't help.

more options

go to Tools Menu -> Add-ons -> Extensions section -> Right-Click "Norton Confidential Toolbar" & select "Find Updates" -> If an Update is available then Update "Norton Confidential Toolbar" otherwise REMOVE "Norton Confidential Toolbar" -> Restart Firefox

Similarly go to Tools Menu -> Add-ons -> Extensions section -> Right-Click other Incompatible add-ons & select "Find Updates" -> If an Update is available then Update your Add-ons (one by one). Otherwise REMOVE All Incompatible Extensions (one by one) -> Restart Firefox

When you have Removed all Incompatbile Add-ons, the Extensions section will list only the Add-ons which are Compatible with your Firefox version.

"Add-ons Manager" doesn't give me the option of removing or updating "Norton Confidential Toolbar" See attached screen shot. Part of the problem is this mismatch between what is on my screen vs what is supposed to be on my screen.

In Safe Mode the display in Add-Ons Manager/Extensions is the same as before. In Troubleshooting Info the ID for Norton Confidential Toolbar is listed, but no such file is present in user/Library/application/support/Firefox/profiles/extensions. Consequently, I can't even delete this add on manually. I have wasted enough of your time, not to speak of mine. Is there some way I can simply trash the current installation of Firefox and install a fresh version, while preserving the organization of my bookmarks?

Backup your Bookmarks from two methods:

1) Manual Backup https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing%20up%20and%20restoring%20bookmarks#w_manual-backup

2) Exporting Bookmarks to an HTML file https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Exporting%20bookmarks%20to%20an%20HTML%20file

Now CLOSE Firefox (ALT + F -> Exit). Start Firefox in Safe Mode by Holding down the SHIFT key while starting Firefox.

Firefox Safe Mode window will appear. Select ALL Options and click "Make Changes & Restart".

Check and tell if its working.

This didn't work. After restarting, but before importing the bookmarks.html file the Tools/Add-Ons Manager/Extensions page still looked as before. See attached file. Importing the html file worked OK except that the bookmarks tool bar was not restored.

So your add-ons problem has been resolved.. All of your add-ons have been Removed. Now install only the add-ons which are compatible with your version of Firefox.

For the Bookmarks problem, press CTRL + B for Bookmarks Sidebar OR go to View Menu -> Sidebar -> select "Bookmarks"

Check and tell if its working.

I am now back where I started. Clue: when I right click (control click) on a tab (Netflix in this case) the menu does not include the command "Pin as App-Tab" See attached. I am evidently not seeing the new command structure. Should I try downloading a fresh copy of 5.0.1?

No joy. The "customize tool-bar" window does not have an icon for app-tabs. Since I don't have the new features of 5.0.1 I might as well go back to the previous version, which is compatible with Norton. How do I do this?

Did you Remove ALL Incompatible Add-ons ??

more options

Only the Norton add-on is listed as incompatible, and it is disabled (see attached screen shot) I can't find the relevant Norton file, so I can't remove it manually. I suspect that it is really gone but Firefox hasn't registered this fact. I have already tried running with all ad-ons disabled, again with no joy. I am tempted to simply export my bookmarks to Safari and forget the whole thing.

I am using a Mac OS 10.6.8. Are your references relevant to that?

more options

In your Mac you must have a place where all your Installed programs are listed. Try to Uninstall the Norton Toolbar from there.

only my 1st reference is related to Windows. You can still use my 2nd reference

Check and tell if its working.
