When I download a file, the download window opens, but no file is listed there, even though the file was actually downloaded.

The download window box remains empty, no matter how many files I download. I can go get them in the "download" folder, but that is annoying.

Do you have Firefox set to remember download history? Options > Privacy > [x] Remember download history. NOTE: The option on that panel "Firefox will:" must be set to "Use custom settings for history" in order to see all of the options available.

Are you clearing download history with History > Clear Recent History or when closing Firefox (Options > Privacy > [x] Clear history when Firefox closes > Settings)?
