After an upgrade for Firefox 5 and at the same time, updates to Norton for mac, FF would lock up and "not respond". After a Force Quit and reboot, FF would open and then immediately close. Attempted a fresh FF download and install, same effect. Downgrade to version 3 and same effect. Disabled all Norton with version 3 installed and same effect. Thankfully Safari is not affected! Tried making new profile per FF support and same effect. Same results in normal mode or safe mode. Opens the page for about 1 second and then the program closes. No crash or logging of the shutdown as a crash or crash ID. Have checked for all software updates and found a mac osx update, installed and no change to FF behavior. Hoping to find a way to keep bookmarks when this is all restored. Can that be extracted from my profile now? After an update on Norton program and definition files, a complete scan revealed no viruses. --- Update: After using time machine to go back to previous working versions of firefox and the related library files, the behavior was the same.

--- ANSWER! Uninstalled all of the Symantec products using the uninstaller provided in the utilities folder for symantec. Firefox restored to service, restored current profile and upgraded back to FF 5.0 and it works. Something in the latest Norton Security Suite for Mac was interfering, causing FF to open and then close.
