firtefox opens infinite number of tabs when email links to web sites are clicked

When I click on "contact" email links to web stores or any web site for that matter, firefox continues to open tabs until I shut down firefox by going into task manager. In task manager I will see three instances of firefox at work leaping back and forth between the three instances.
