I cannot upgrade from Firefox 2.0.0.9 on myAsus 2G Surf!

more options

I have owned my Asus 2G Surf since 2007, but I have never been able to upgrade my Firefox browser from the original version 2.0.0.9. Now I have problems with some sites as they state that my browser is out of date and not supported. I thought I had managed to get version 2.0.0.20 but it failed to upgradefor some reason not stated.

Nope, the EeePC 2G Surf doesn't meet system requirements for the Ubuntu Netbook Remix - 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor 512 MB RAM 4 GB Flash disk (SSD) or hard disk

Your RAM should be enough, but your processor is only 900MHz and the original SSD is 2GB (hence the 2G Surf model name).

I was unhappy with the performance of Firefox 3 on Xandros even with that GTK upgrade, so I dumped Xandros.

I installed EasyPeasy 1.6 (an offshoot of the Ubuntu Remix made for older netbooks like the EeePC) on my EeePC 900 and it filled the 4GB SSD after a few Ubuntu updates. http://www.geteasypeasy.com/

The version of Xandros Linux (from early 2007) that Asus used on the eeePC doesn't have the GTK package needed to run Firefox 3+ versions, you need to update it.

The result of both replies has been very useful. I would like to know how to 'dump' Xandros and install easypeasy so will look into that. I have an 8G SD card which presently has Puppy Linux 3.1 on it as an alternative operating system, but there is still loads of room left. I would ike to know if I could use the SD card to install easypeasy on rather than the 2GSSD. I have a 14 year old Compaq EVO running Ubuntu 11 and it is really fast and crisp in operation, so I am a fan of that distro! My main problem with the installed Xandros is really that despite the tabs etc. for adding new software, I can never find any! It is always a zilch! This means that I will get further and further behind as the eeepc gets older!

IMO, ASUS just stopped doing anything with updates for Xandros in late 2008, I never got any updates after like Oct 2008, a couple of months after I bought my EeePC. It seemed that once Microsoft "strong armed" ASUS with a cheap version of WinXP (a "netbook" version) in late 2008, ASUS just dumped Xandros.

Best to ask about installing Ubuntu or EasyPeasy to SD card in either of these two forums. I am not sure how you would go about booting from the SD card. Of course, one solution would be to install a larger SSD to replace that 2GB SSD. IIRC, the SSD can be accessed thru the access panel on the bottom, without the need for major disassembly.
